DesignGroup

DesignGroup Award winning architectural firm with focus on healthcare, education, libraries, civic and cultural Our offices are located in Columbus, OH and Pittsburgh, PA.

We’re proud that, despite the trends and transitions that continually influence architecture, a simple set of core values has helped bring us to where we are today. And will continue to guide us into the future. These deep-seated ideas align with the markets we serve and influence the way we work. Design That Elevates. We strive to design buildings that provide inspirational spaces in which to wor

k, live, learn, and heal, and that contribute to the long-term sustainability of their contexts. It’s the ultimate measure for everything we do. Sustainable Architecture. We’re proud to have raised awareness of being stewards of the built environment. DesignGroup's legacy of sustainable design — which prioritizes the conservation of energy and natural resources — dates back to the firm's beginning. We’ve been recognized with many AIA sustainability awards, as well as public and private recognition for green design and energy efficiency. All of our designers are LEED Accredited Professionals. Sustainable architecture is at the center of DesignGroup's work. Healthy Communities. Design plays a strong role in enhancing the user experience and supporting better outcomes. Return on investment and high-performance design drives DesignGroup's planning and design approach. Modern, sunlit, carefully considered spaces benefit patients, guests, and employees in these buildings alike. Civic Responsibility. Our role in civic responsibility extends far beyond client work. We volunteer untold hours (and sweat equity) to professional, civic, and human services organizations. Our associates are deeply involved in community organizations such as the Discovery District, Greater Columbus Arts Council, and others that advocate for beautiful, sustainable neighborhood growth and preservation. Lifelong Learning. Curiosity and professional growth are simply a way of life here. Through our unique DesignGroup University (DGU), our firm is committed to the continuing education of both staff and clients. Our annual design trips take us to new places where we can examine, contemplate, discuss, and grow. This commitment to life-long learning extends into the communities where our projects have touched the lives of children, teens, and adults.

For our Managing Principal and Design Director, Joe Mayer, the new OSU Hospital Tower is a milestone in DesignGroup teamwork.

"Collaboration is always a part of architecture, but the sheer size of this project's team required rigorous coordination,” says Joe. "Our teams focused on how each component was in service of the much larger impact of the project. Now that the Tower is open, it’s thrilling to see how the team’s hard work and dedication translated into the hospital.”

Joe has a personal connection to the Tower as well. His mom has worked at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center for over 25 years. He and his family toured the Tower prior to opening where Joe proudly shared the remarkable new facilities and treatment areas. "I'm thrilled to have been part of what will be such an impactful healing space for the local community and far beyond.”

The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center new hospital tower is a place of healing and hope, and it is a defining project for DesignGroup. Our CEO, Sherm Moreland, led the architectural team that started planning the tower in 2015, many years before the project became a reality.

A small, dedicated team of seven industry veterans from engineering, construction and estimating, and The Ohio State University's planning and leadership teams, met weekly to plan the new hospital tower. The team integrated OSU's framework 2.0, a process that aligned the campus with its mission and programs. In 2016, the planning effort was named "13 Questions" and Sherm likes to refer to that team as the "Magnificent Seven" due to the scale and scope of planning, investigation, user engagement, modeling, testing, and choices to set the stage for project approval.

Now that the Tower is open and the commercials play on every TV channel, the central Ohio community feels the excitement about this new hospital. Patients have a new space to receive care and heal. Mothers can show their newborn babies a beautiful view of the city skyline on the three top floors dedicated to maternity care. World-class healthcare at a regional level.

"I see it when I drive down 315; I can see it from our new office in the Peninsula," says Sherm, "a humble reminder of the important work performed 10 years ago by the "Magnificent Seven" and the value of asking intentional questions during the planning phase.
