A leaning tree gets noticed, but the lean itself isn't always the most important detail. What matters more is the root plate, the area of soil around the base where the roots anchor the tree, and whether it's lifting, cracking, or shifting.

Some trees have grown at an angle their entire lives and are perfectly stable. Others develop a sudden lean because the root plate is failing underneath, and that's a very different situation that can turn into an emergency fast, especially after heavy rain softens the soil.

Checking the ground around the base, not just eyeballing the trunk, is part of how we assess whether a leaning tree needs immediate attention or just ongoing monitoring. It's a detail a lot of quick drive-by assessments miss.

Emerald ash borer treatment works best while an ash tree is still actively moving water and nutrients through its system. As trees start shifting toward dormancy in the coming weeks, that window for effective treatment narrows considerably.

Middle Tennessee has significant ash borer pressure, and treatment is one of the few tree health services where timing genuinely changes the outcome. A tree treated now has a much better chance of absorbing the treatment fully than one treated after growth has slowed for the season.

If you've got an ash tree you've been meaning to have looked at, this is the stretch of the year where it's worth making the call rather than waiting until spring. Not every ash tree needs treatment, but the ones that do benefit most from acting now.

Thompson's Station has seen more new construction in the last few years than almost anywhere else in Williamson County, and a good share of that starts with a lot that needs clearing. Standing timber, brush, and root systems all have to come out before grading and foundation work can begin.

Lot clearing is different from a standard removal job. It means coordinating with builders on timelines, protecting boundary trees the homeowner or developer wants to keep, and leaving a site that's genuinely ready for the next phase of construction, not just cleared of the obvious stuff.

We've worked directly with builders and homeowners on sites across Thompson's Station and Spring Hill where the schedule mattered as much as the work itself. Getting a site construction-ready on time is its own kind of expertise.

We had great experience with Franklin Tree Service. It started with a free assessment, which resulted in a detailed job description for my yard. A couple things I like about Franklin Tree Service is that it’s Family owned business and they know about trees like an arborist. There was no question on what team needed to do. I had a combination of tree removals and pruning.The team stayed in communication at all times with their headsets. They were respectful of the yard and cleaned up before leaving.I would use them again.

With Williamson County's real estate market as active as it is, a declining or dead tree near the property line can turn into an unexpected sticking point during a home sale.

Appraisers and buyers' inspectors notice hazard trees, and a tree in obvious decline can become a negotiating point or even a repair request before closing. Addressing it ahead of a listing avoids that conversation entirely.

A quick health assessment can tell a homeowner whether a tree just needs pruning to look its best for showings, or whether it's declining enough that removal makes more sense before the sign goes in the yard.

Climbing a damaged tree after a storm is a different job than routine pruning. Before anyone on our crew is assigned to storm response, their ISA certification and OSHA safety training have to be current.

That's not a one-time box to check. Certifications require continuing education, and our crew treats that renewal process as part of the job, not an afterthought squeezed in when convenient.

It's also why we don't hand storm work to a subcontractor or a crew member who hasn't kept those credentials up to date. The homeowner calling us in a stressful moment deserves a climber who trained for exactly that situation.

A recent job in Belle Meade involved a silver maple that had lost a major limb in a storm, leaving the trunk leaning toward a stone retaining wall and a paved driveway below.

Dropping the whole tree at once wasn't an option with that much at stake. The crew rigged and lowered the tree in sections, piece by piece, keeping full control over where each cut landed.

The wall and driveway came through without a scratch, and the homeowner didn't have to worry about a second failure while the work was underway. That's the difference careful rigging makes on a tight site.

If an arborvitae or cedar around Franklin looks thin and brown in patches, check the branches for small, spindle-shaped cocoons made of bits of foliage. Those are bagworms, and late summer is when the damage becomes obvious.

Bagworms feed inside their protective bags all season, stripping needles as they grow. By the time homeowners notice, a lot of feeding has already happened, and evergreens don't regrow needles the way deciduous trees regrow leaves.

Heavily infested evergreens can be treated, but the earlier it's caught, the better the tree's odds of a full recovery next season. A quick look at the branches now can save a tree that's been quietly losing ground for weeks.
