B&B Decks, now installing fiberglass pools across Hampton Roads, and the first thing we tell folks in Smithfield is that the pool and the deck around it need to be planned together.

A fiberglass shell shows up as one piece on a truck. Excavation, setting the shell, backfill, plumbing, and the equipment pad usually run 2 to 4 weeks before water goes in.

The deck surround is where a lot of yards go wrong. The shell sits on a compacted gravel base with loose backfill around it, so deck footings can't land in that zone. We push them outside the excavation line and dig them to the depth Isle of Wight County calls for.

Drainage matters too. A composite deck tied into the coping needs to slope away from the shell and leave a gap so water can move.
