This is not just old school it's Good school.. I personally still install often just like this.. tack with nails and I will always use glue plus finish off with screws for back up on the nails ...my drywall hatchet is sharpened to a razors edge.. time looking for a knife is wasting time on install... And the corner rite mesh is bomb proof longevity... Once this board was installed in the 1940s -late 1960's a fat coat gypsum plaster nearly 3/4" was often applied over the top ..one of the strongest generations of gypsum board plastering..
This gypsum board he is installing was called rock lath and if you look close you can see another generation of gypsum board to his right side that has holes through it ..that was called button board.. the holes acted as keys for the gypsum plaster base to lock through...
