šŸŽ‰Please join us in welcoming Edgar Navarro-Mendoza QKA’s Project Coordinator in our Santa Rosa office! šŸŽ‰

I chose QKA for the growth opportunities and the chance to expand my knowledge in the industry. I’m excited to contribute my strong interpersonal skills and my understanding of windows, doors, and construction processes.

I value the close-knit, collaborative environment at QKA and the opportunity to learn from experienced team members across different trades. My familiarity with construction workflows is a strength I look forward to building on. I’ve also been very impressed by how welcoming and supportive everyone has been.

We're excited to have you join the team! ✨

At the A Chance In Life Gala, the spirit of giving and opportunity was on full display. Alongside Claudia, Lyanne Schuster, Lisa Sparks, Tiffany Young, and Mark Quattrocchi, Juliano Sorondo reflects on the evening—sharing his thoughts on the foundation’s impact, highlights from the event, and a unique experience that made the night even more memorable.

"QKA's mission, "Make a Difference," is directly aligned with the foundation's goals—helping students succeed and giving opportunities to those who otherwise would be without. It’s an opportunity to raise a substantial amount of funding for the foundation. Many generous donors and attendees contribute directly to the program. For me, it’s an opportunity to help kids around the world realize the potential they have when given the chance to showcase themselves. I’ve always believed that with opportunity comes change, and every student deserves that chance.

The highlight of the event was witnessing the generosity around the room—it was astounding and inspiring. The gala atmosphere was elegant, with a strong focus on emphasizing the foundation’s mission. What stood out to me most was the generosity in the room, which was truly astounding and inspiring."

As the 2000s arrived and Y2K passed without issue, QKA was in the midst of developing a districtwide facilities master plan for the St. Helena Unified School District. The original intent was to pursue a modest modernization of the historic elementary school. That plan changed after a classroom fire occurred when a science teacher’s iguana tipped over its heat lamp. While the fire investigator jokingly suggested questioning the iguana, the incident proved to be a pivotal moment for the project.

In the wake of the fire, the scope expanded significantly, allowing for a more comprehensive modernization and historic restoration of the school. This became one of my first significant historic restoration projects and launched a long trajectory of similar work for the firm. The experience gained at St. Helena ultimately enabled QKA to pursue larger historic school restorations, including the 100,000-plus-square-foot restoration of the 1920s-era Alameda High School.

Napa Valley Unified School District emerged as one of QKA’s earliest and most important school clients. Winning NVUSD’s trust took time and persistence, spearheaded by Mark’s efforts to build a strong relationship with Director of Facilities, Don Evans. Don was known to joke with Mark that he was selected as NVUSD’s District Architect because ā€œhe just kept calling me!ā€ This collaboration resulted in nearly 100-design projects including the historic renovation of the 1920’s neoclassical Napa High School into the District’s Education Center that marked a significant milestone for the firm’s historic restoration reputation. Don became an instrumental district leader whose guidance and character left a lasting impression. That foundational relationship led to further collaborations, including the new $125 million American Canyon High School.

NextGen Trades Academy students recently visited the Piner High School Folia Building as part of a hands‑on tour designed to expose them to an active construction project and possible career pathways in the trades. During the visit, Claudia shared why opportunities like this matter and reflected on her connection to NextGen Trades Academy and the impact it has on preparing young adults for the workforce.

NextGen Trades Academy was introduced to me by its founder, Leticia Hanke, a local roofing contractor dedicated to providing young adults and underserved youth with exposure to the trades and access to vocational and apprenticeship pathways. She brings a genuine passion to the work and consistently creating opportunities for students and encouraging them to challenge themselves and grow. Over the years, several staff including myself have been speakers within the program, participated with my family in LIME Day each December, and attend their annual gala.

One thing I love about the NextGen Trades Academy is how it goes beyond trade exposure by equipping students with essential life skills, including resume writing, professional communication, and interview preparation. I’ve personally seen the impact of this work, one participant I know personally has progressed through the program, worked in low voltage for the past 5 years and is now on a path toward becoming a licensed electrician.
