Crawford & Stearns was thrilled to be a part of the restoration team for "The NEST at Strand-Lamon" in downtown Watertown, NY. The project was honored in NYC this past Monday with an "Excellence in Historic Preservation Award" from the Preservation League of New York State.

"The NEST is an exciting new hub for performance art and entrepreneurship in the North Country. The two building complex located just off the historic Public Square in downtown Watertown consists of The Strand - Watertown (1914) and the adjacent c.1900 Lamon Building. The redevelopment has created a dynamic and innovative partnership between SUNY Jefferson Community College (JCC) and the HarmoNNY Performing Arts Group. JCC's NEST facility provides versatile co-working space, conference rooms, bookable offices, high speed internet, and free access to training for members. Above the Lamon Building is now a new fully accessible outdoor rooftop deck and lounge providing a unique reception and performance venue. The Strand Theater, featuring a flexible theater with a small stage for presentations and theatrical performances, is the highlight of the complex. This adaptive reuse project was recognized with a 2025 Excellence in Historic Preservation Award.

Congrats to the CPC and the Willard Memorial Chapel!

The Preserve New York Grantee Spotlight:
Community Preservation Committee, Inc.,
Willard Memorial Chapel Condition Report

The grant will be used to complete a Building Condition Report, providing a detailed assessment of the 1892 Chapel’s structure, systems, and historic features. This report will guide future restoration efforts and help ensure the long-term preservation of the National Historic Landmark, and will address key concerns such as masonry and roof repairs, stained-glass and mosaic preservation, interior painting and stenciling, water and fire safety issues, system upgrades, and accessibility improvements. The work will be completed by consultants from Crawford & Stearns, Architects and Preservation Planners, PLLC.

The Willard Memorial Chapel is one of the finest examples of extant 19th century architecture in Auburn, NY. It is the only chapel interior known to exist featuring a total Louis Comfort Tiffany design. CPC’s efforts to preserve, restore and maintain the chapel complex have been ongoing since they acquired the property in 1990.

Preserve New York is a regrant partnership between the New York State Council on the Arts () and the Preservation League, made possible with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature. Link in bio to learn more about all of this year’s NYSCA regrant recipients.

Interior renovations are progressing at St. Paul's Syracuse! It's exciting to see the new quarry tile going down in the Parish House kitchen. So happy to be rid of the horrid old green tile.

We are so grateful to everyone who has supported our Open Doors Project. They are working on the kitchen floor now and it's coming out great--along with the new window. This is so exciting to see the progress being made. Please remember that until further notice, you must not come in the kitchen door--instead use the Chapel Door on Montgomery St. Soon they will be retiling the Sargent Foyer and another area as well. DO NOT WALK ON ANY NEW FLOORING! Follow the detour signs please.

It is with great sadness that we learned this week of the passing of our friend and colleague Roy Perry. Many of us here worked with Roy on several housing rehab and historic rehabilitation projects in and around Public Square in downtown Watertown. Roy was a wonderful collaborator, often suggesting viable solutions to difficult problems. His obit says: "He approached every project with precision, integrity and a deep commitment to using his talents including leadership, communication, problem-solving, and technical expertise. No matter which type of construction, Roy excelled and obtained various awards and recognition, including three from the state of New York for historic preservation." Indeed he did! Godspeed Roy, you will be missed. Photos are of Roy with several of us at the Franklin Building grand opening in 2011. https://www.olearyfuneralservice.com/obituary/Royal-RoyPerry

Congratulations to White Pine Camp, LLC, and General Manager Sandy Paben who received a Preservation Award this Fall from AARCH - the Adirondack Architectural Heritage (AARCH). "AARCH’s Annual Preservation Awards Ceremony recognizes the individuals, businesses, communities, and organizations whose efforts exemplify the best of historic preservation work in the Adirondack region. This event shines a light on the passions and extraordinary work of the people who make historic preservation such an important part of the region’s vitality."

AARCH: "In spring 2020, the historic Service Quarters (now the Lodge Building) burned to the ground in a dramatic fire. After the fire, White Pine Camp faced the question of whether to design a more practical modern structure or faithfully rebuild the historic Service Quarters. The former was an opportunity to generate more income with larger, winterized units. Reconstructing the historic building, on the other hand, imposed the limitations of smaller units and more creative electrical and plumbing upgrades. White Pine Camp Associates (www.whitepinecamp.com) decided to remain faithful to the site’s historic integrity and rebuild the Service Quarters as they were before the fire. They enlisted the architectural firm Crawford and Stearns ... Key architectural features, such as the brainstorm siding, wood windows, moldings, and all exterior details were replicated by skilled craftsmen. Although the reconstructed building now includes a full basement and modern infrastructure (including a fire suppression system) it appears as it did in the early years of the camp.
