Breathing beneath the leaves roof.

The Anji Culture and Art Center is taking shape between the city, river, mountains, and tea fields. Designed as an open cultural landscape, the project brings six public venues together under a series of overlapping roofs inspired by scattered bamboo leaves.

A recent visit with the team offered a closer view of the project in progress, from the building’s full scale to the atmosphere beneath its giant roof.

A station beneath the landscape

Two years after completion, the project reappears in an unexpected way. On the way to the site visit in Jiaxing, the journey inevitably passes through the station itself.

Rail travel remains a central part of intercity movement in China. Passing through a space we designed, now in constant use, brings a more direct reading of how it operates day to day. The experience unfolds step by step, from the shaded surface above to the tunnels below, and out onto the platforms where trains arrive and depart.

Seeing the project maintained with such care, still close to its original state, gives a sense of continuity between design and use.

A continuous roof rising from the ground.

Set by South Lake, the civic center brings exhibition, education, and public life together under one roof. The structure frames a central lawn while holding the three venues as a single form.

The project remains under construction, as the roof structure extends outward, piece by piece, beginning to define the scale of the whole.

Jiaxing Civic Center is expected to be completed in September 2026.

A brief moment into the hidden layers.

The grand staircase is being assembled, revealing its inner layers like a living, three-dimensional diagram for the curious eye. There is a specific beauty in this stage of construction, where the new metal structure meets the mottled concrete of 1971. It is a journey that starts within the history of the cement factory and moves upward toward the floating volume that now sits where the old roof once was.

The Ark is expected to be completed in September 2026.
