Old Cherry Hills Cottage: The Kitchen

The kitchen was never designed to stand on its own. From the beginning, it was conceived as part of one large, shared space with the great room, where cooking, dining, and everyday life naturally overlap.

One of the biggest design decisions was placing the range directly opposite the fireplace. Those two elements establish the center line of the room and create a visual connection between the kitchen and the living space beyond. Above, the cupola and dormer windows bring daylight into the middle of the house, giving the kitchen a brightness that simply wasn’t possible before the renovation.

Throughout the room, plaster finishes on the hood and ceilings add warmth and texture, while inset cabinetry, brass hardware, and a restrained palette create continuity with the rest of the home.

We paired hand-applied stucco with slate and natural wood for this English Arts and Crafts Renovation. There’s something inherently relatable about natural materials. They age the way we do, gaining character as the decades pass.

Old Cherry Hills Cottage: The Great Room

If this home has a heart, this is it. Before the renovation, the house was a series of small, dark rooms that felt disconnected from one another. The client’s vision was a generous, two-story room where family and friends could naturally spend time together. Making that happen meant reworking nearly the entire layout of both floors.

The plaster fireplace sits at the center of the room, framed by exposed timber beams and a large iron chandelier. Above, a cupola and dormer windows pull natural light into what was once one of the darkest parts of the house. We also wrapped the staircase around the fireplace, so you catch glimpses of people moving through the home as they head upstairs.

On one side, bifold doors open directly onto the back porch. Upstairs, interior windows look into the room from the hallway leading to the bedrooms. The room is large, but those visual connections make it feel welcoming rather than overwhelming. Nearly every major space in the house connects to it in some way.

As summer reaches its peak, the stone terrace at Pondbank serves as a reminder of our materials philosophy. Built to last, but also built to patina. The natural stone absorbs the August sun, holding onto the warmth long after dusk.

We think about how a home feels across the entire day. At Pikes View, as the sun moves, light passes through the high clerestory windows and travels down the helical stairs, creating a shifting play of light on the stone walls.

Old Cherry Hills Cottage

Built in 1936, this home was nearly lost to time. Our client lived next door, and when the aging house came up for sale, she bought it for one reason: to preserve a piece of the neighborhood’s history before it could be torn down and replaced.

She wanted the home to feel like a cottage you might stumble upon in the Deep South. Southern vernacular architecture became the guiding inspiration for the renovation. We preserved the original first-floor footprint, expanding only at the rear to create a ground-floor primary suite. Inside, the house was taken back to the studs, with just one original feature remaining: the living room fireplace.

Outside, the details tell the story. A synthetic wood-shake roof captures the character of hand-split cedar while meeting Colorado’s fire requirements. Natural wood siding, painted shutters, stained doors, and copper gas lanterns from Bevolo in New Orleans establish the home’s Southern character, while generous front porches create spaces made for slow evenings and long conversations.
