We put our architecture skills to the test in a unique simulated pressure test…
The architecture team each individually developed a concept for a small-scale housing development with several core parameters regarding the maximum square footage, stories, and functions of the building
Our judges simulated roles as community advocates, financing directors, and city planners to provide direct feedback to the architects
We went through 3 rounds, working through shared rules of engagement, individual site strategy, massing, concept development, and a wildcard round where each participant received one challenge forcing them to revise their design on the fly
The team had to present their final result with one digital snapshot and one physical representative model
They faced judging from the panel the following day and received a ranking grade based on their overall concept, thoroughness of information, design/branding appeal, functionality, and adaptation to changes and feedback
It was a fun exercise for the team that reinforced that architecture is not just about creating good ideas, but it’s about navigating complexity and refining those ideas in real time
