Growing plants is one of my favorite parts of what we do. 🌱

These little camellias are still early in their journey, but this is where it starts — small plants, fresh pots, new growth, and even a few tiny buds already forming.

As growers, we get to care for them through all the stages in between… watering, feeding, shaping, watching roots develop, watching new growth push, and waiting for the day they’re finally ready to leave Rugged Roots and go to their permanent home.

There’s something really special about knowing a plant started here this small and will eventually be growing in someone’s landscape for years to come.

If you’re looking for a fast-growing evergreen for privacy, screening, property lines, or creating a natural windbreak, Green Giant Arborvitae is hard to beat. They grow quickly, stay beautifully green year-round, and make an impressive privacy screen as they mature.

We currently have a great selection at Rugged Roots Nursery:

Whether you want to start small and let them grow or go with a larger plant for more immediate height, we’ve got options!

Green Giants can mature around 50–60 ft tall and 12–20 ft wide, so they’re a great choice when you have more room and want a tall, substantial privacy screen. They’re also known for their fast growth once established.

💜 Native. Beautiful. Beneficial.

Meet American Beautyberry (Callicarpa americana) — a gorgeous native shrub that deserves a spot in more Southern landscapes!

This Southeastern native brings so much to the garden:

🌿 Mature size: typically about 3–6 ft tall and wide
☀️ Light: Full sun to part shade
🌸 Summer: delicate pink-to-lavender blooms that attract pollinators
💜 Late summer into fall: clusters of vivid purple berries that wrap around the stems
🐦 Wildlife value: the berries provide food for birds and other wildlife
🌳 Great for: native gardens, woodland edges, wildlife gardens, naturalized areas, and mixed shrub borders

‼️ $15 for a 3 gallon pot

One of the things I love most about American Beautyberry is that it gives you a completely different look from the typical formal landscape shrub. It has a soft, natural woodland feel through the growing season — and then those incredible berries steal the show in fall.

The berries on ours are just beginning to develop now, so the best part is still coming. 💜

🍂🌿 Fall planting season is almost here — and this is one of the BEST times of year to get plants in the ground!

September is such a great month to plant in North Alabama. The soil is still warm, which encourages root growth, but we’re heading toward cooler temperatures that put much less stress on newly planted shrubs and trees than the heat of summer.

Planting this fall gives your plants time to start establishing a strong root system before winter — and a head start before next summer’s heat! 🌱

Need something colorful that isn’t another green shrub? 💜

Purple Heart adds rich purple foliage to flower beds, borders, containers, and those awkward spaces beneath trees or in front of larger shrubs.

Use it as a low-growing border, allow it to spread into a colorful groundcover, or pair it with bright flowers and tropical plants for a dramatic summer display. The contrast against green landscaping is beautiful!

It grows quickly during warm weather and can easily be trimmed or pinched back to keep it fuller and within the space you want.

The first photos are landscaping inspiration so you can picture the possibilities. My available plants will be shown in the final photos.
