An addition isn't just one thing, and the right type depends entirely on your specific property and what problem you're trying to solve.

Some lots have room to build out, while some are better suited to going up. Some problems require a lot of space to solve, while some just need a little or reconfiguration.

We are so proud of our Building Designer Jorge Arreola. 🏆

He came home from the TIBD (Texas Institute of Building Design) conference with not one but two awards!

First place for Interior Spaces for the "Grand Coastal Revival" project, specifically that gorgeous, clever wine cellar tucked under the staircase.

Second place for Remodel/Addition for the "Houstonian Highrise" project, a complete renovation of a modern highrise residence.

What makes us especially proud is how different these two projects are from each other. The Grand Coastal Revival is a historic home full of warmth and character, and the Houstonian Highrise is a crisp and modern home, a completely different aesthetic.

That is because we don't have a signature look, we have a signature process, and it shows up differently in every home we touch.

Huge congratulations to Jorge, and thank you to TIBD for putting on a conference that celebrates this craft.

Now someone help us find another shelf. 😁

Remodeling has a reputation for being the kind of thing that makes you question your own judgment around week three. Fair! A lot of remodels do go sideways. But it almost always comes down to the same thing: too many decisions made too late, by too many people who weren't coordinating with each other.

HOT TAKE: The cheapest bid and the piecemeal plan have a lot in common. They both feel like the responsible choice. They're usually not.

We've watched families choose the lowest estimate only to hire someone else to finish the job when things went sideways.

We've also watched families renovate one room at a time for years, spending more in total than a whole house renovation would have cost, with a house that still never quite came together.

The instinct to spend less upfront is completely understandable.

Construction is expensive and the numbers can feel scary. But "less now" has a way of becoming "more later" in ways that are hard to see until you're already in it.

Trustworthy contractor. Realistic budget. Clear scope. Those three things will take you a lot further than the lowest number on a spreadsheet.

We've had this conversation a lot. We'd rather have it with you before you start than after.
