Celebrating the hands, craft, and collaboration behind the home.

This project was shaped by an extraordinary group of creative partners, craftsmen, builders, and artisans who brought care and precision to every detail. The Architectural Digest feature is a beautiful milestone, but the real story is the team behind it.

We’re so grateful to everyone who helped bring this home to life.

Nearly every room on the first floor of our Emerald Bay project opens onto an inner courtyard anchored by a beautiful twisted willow tree. Down the hall from the living room and speakeasy, a his-and-hers study is arranged around a whitewashed brick fireplace complemented with two early 20th-century pieces by André Kertész. This is another nod to the home’s “old-soul” character, achieved by thoughtfully crafting distinct rooms rather than following a modern open-concept design.

A hidden door in the hallway transforms unused space behind the living room’s fireplace into a secret spot for parties and date nights. While an artfully arranged bar enlivens gatherings, a speakeasy introduces a playful spirit without disturbing the home’s overall tranquility.

A captivating Lee Simmonds oil painting beckons as you enter the speakeasy, the hidden door melting seamlessly into the wall paneling. Beside our custom-designed banquette sits a Japanese Twist Cashew Side Table atop a Bihar Noir rug. Petite swivel cocktail chairs add a modern touch to this colorful, secret escape.

Mornings begin with the Rohani family gathered in the kitchen over coffee and breakfast, while the kids play beneath the willow tree outside. The redesigned kitchen reflects a commitment to functionality without compromising style. Instead of a traditional dining room, a spacious dining space connects directly to the kitchen, featuring a cozy banquette and bar seating curved around the kitchen island, fostering conversation and connection.

A Josef Albers painting hangs casually above the fireplace, while a Picasso plate is perched beside the kitchen range. While it’s uncommon to see art of this caliber in a kitchen, it truly reflects the approachable atmosphere the family wants for their living space. A place where museum-quality pieces feel perfectly at home.

Tucked behind pocket doors, a moody den drenched in deep olive is home to a collection of artifacts, art, and antique furnishings. Softly lit by a vintage Tobia Scarpa “Celestia” ceiling fixture, the built-in cabinet showcases a Ruth Duckworth sculpture, a Picasso ceramic reminiscent of Matisse, and an array of ancient pottery and artifacts from Greece, Amlash, Rome, and Egypt.

Above an antique rug and BDDW Abel club chair hangs an Otis Jones painting, while a pair of Quentin James McCaffrey graphite drawings hang on the opposite side of the doorway.

In the primary bedroom, his-and-hers ensuite bathrooms offer a tranquil retreat for morning rituals and quiet moments of relaxation at day’s end.

The custom shower, inspired by an antique door we found in France, is complemented by a pewter soaking tub resting on Calacatta Monet marble. Marble details carry throughout her primary bathroom and tie the space together, like subtle casing that lines a doorway to a closet.

In his bathroom, rich Blue de Savoie marble walls set a masculine tone, while custom rhombus-patterned oak floors strike a welcoming balance, creating a more relaxed atmosphere.

“Built-in character throughout the interiors, like chair rails and stained glass windows, felt like the beginning of a sketch, but there was room to elaborate.”

From the beginning, we wanted to embrace the home’s classical architecture while capturing the emotional essence of California living. We extended the paneling to the ceiling, introduced pocket doors to the den, and repositioned the staircase, making the layout more family-friendly and functional.

Silas sits on a custom sofa upholstered in mohair, with framed art by Fu Xiaotong hanging above, illuminated by a vintage Itsu floor lamp and a Héctor Esrawe Parábola fixture on the side table.

It is such a privilege to finally introduce our Emerald Bay project with .

Thank you to , to for the story, and to for capturing the home so beautifully.

Designing and building this home felt extra special, knowing our own co-founder and her family would be running through the French doors to play by the willow tree.
