Nevada Day is a legal holiday in the U.S. state of Nevada that commemorates its admission into the Union as the 36th state on October 31, 1864. Civil War Statehood: President Abraham Lincoln and the U.S. Congress fast-tracked Nevada's statehood during the Civil War to secure three electoral votes for Lincoln's reelection and gain an extra pro-Union, anti-slavery vote in Congress. This history gives Nevada its famous "Battle Born" state motto. Silver & Mining Heritage: The celebration honors the state's rich history, particularly the 1859 discovery of the Comstock Lode in Virginia City, which earned Nevada its nickname, "The Silver State". State Pride and Culture: It serves as a community heritage celebration to honor Nevada's indigenous, pioneer, and modern roots. Timing: Although Nevada was admitted on October 31, the state officially observes the holiday on the last Friday in October to provide a three-day weekend. Closures: State, county, and city government offices, public schools, and libraries close for the day.
