Yesterday was tough. We got all our beds ready to start planting strawberries. We plan on starting that next week once we have favorable conditions. At the scale we do things now comes high risk high reward. It’s all a gamble. I’ll spend $10k-15k to get this in the ground and only hope to see a profit next June. I share these things with yall not for sympathy, but for education. The majority of society is so far removed from our food system that they just don’t know what goes into it. Completely understandable. I wanna make you laugh sometimes, but showing you behind the scenes has always been a priority.

I’ll lose a lot of sleep over this one crop. It ties up my field space and pulls my resources for 10 months out of the year. All for hopes that we have 6 beautiful weeks in the Spring. Risky. But, I’m a gambler and I’ll take my chances. I read something a few weeks ago that I’m trying to lean into. Don’t let tomorrow’s worries steal today’s rest and joy. Some days are heavy on us all. Rest when you can and work hard when you can you need to.

I read quite a bit yesterday about the state of farming in our country. Specifically, the temporary policy of importing a large amount of beef to manipulate the market and drive down prices to benefit the consumer. I agree that food costs are too high for the majority of Americans and agriculture plays a huge role in that. It’s quite complex if you are looking at it from an office in Washington DC. Not near as complex if are standing in a field everywhere else in the country.

We are squeezing our next generation of farmers out with record setting costs and lack of available land. The old model of family farms being passed down to the next generation is over. And it’s almost impossible to start a new farm if you didn’t inherit land. The cost of land is greater than what you can produce in today’s economy.

Record beef prices are a result less cattle on the market and that’s because our older generations are seeing this as a time to get out or scale back. I don’t blame them.

If we don’t come up with a plan to open up resources for farmers then we will continue down a path of less farms and higher food costs. A nation that can’t feed its people is weak and vulnerable. It’s not as complex as many are making it. Gotta have more boots and less suits making policies and decisions.

Secretary Brooke Rollins I understand you are the messenger to the people. Their has to communication both ways if we are to respect you. 1)Country of origin has to happen. People have the right to know where their food comes from and then let them make the best decision for their family. 2) We have to find ways to open up more farmland and slow development.

You are an easy target for criticism right now. I’m not gonna bash you. We need you to help.

Good start after our first 2 pumpkin hauls. Hopefully will be fully set up this time next week. Had a couple people tell me it’s too early. I’ve gotten older and I won’t hear of any of this negativity. It’s never too early for dinner. Never too early for bed. Never too early for a glass of wine. And I can’t fathom how it could possibly be too early to declare Fall and an end to this oppressive heat. Can I get an Amen on this beautiful Sunday morning!?

Couple house cleaning items. I’m doing a lot of tractor work right now. Please give me some room. I know a lot of you are not use to being around heavy equipment. I’m pretty good on them, but I got a little secret. These things will bite you. Think of it as a big beautiful dog. Dont walk right up unless you ask its owner if it’s ok.

For those of you cutting flowers. STOP cutting my strings that hold the plants up! Don’t do it. Pay attention to what you are cutting. I need a little more Martha Stewart and a little less Edward Scissor hands…

Feeling a little extra salty this afternoon. So, y’all getting 2 post in one day. Could be the heat, the Rage Against the machine in my earbuds or the ginger kombucha I’ve been shotgunning. We have started harvesting our first field of pumpkins. Dry conditions are good, but without rain in sight we need to get some in the shade to protect them from the sun. Crop looks excellent so far.

Y’all know I try to be generous with the fruits of our labor. We try to donate financially and with product as much as we can. This time of year I get hammered with requests for pumpkin donations. I get the thought that “it never hurts to ask”. I simply can’t give to everyone. That’s just the truth. Every year we have some groups take it personal that I don’t donate pumpkins to their organization. I give what I can when I can. Now, there are a couple ways to increase your chances. #1 I’ll always look to see if you are an actual customer. I try to support people who support us. If you just heard from your cousin that I deal a lot of pumpkins and your organization from 2 hours away wants to have a pumpkin carving contest, that might not tug at my heart too much. #2 don’t leave me a message in the hottest part of the day. If I see a message wanting something FREE and it’s 100 degrees then it’s getting buried because I’m just not feeling great at that point in the day. Send a message overnight. Let me read it with a clear head after my 5 hours of sleep beside my beautiful wife, wink wink. . #3 don’t approach me from a political standpoint. I’m not giving pumpkins to any political organization. Simply not something I want to set a precedent in doing. Like Michael Jordan said, “even republicans buy shoes” (or pumpkins, or insert whichever party you want).

We got about 12 weeks of really pushing hard to make our season successful. Lots of pumpkins to move. 20,000 strawberry plugs to plant. 150,000 tulips to get in the ground. 25,000 flower plugs for early season 2027 bouquets. And we are sending our Christmas tree orders in this week. It’s a lot.

My need to keep everyone fed, employees paid, taxes handled, fields watered…Can’t be missed one single day. That’s all before I even think about any jingle in my pocket. Keep buying. Good morning. I’m getting a lot of messages if we have flowers? The dahlia fields are starting to look real nice. $10 buckets with $5 admission everyday.

I always shoot yall straight. I strongly dislike August. Sales usually take a big dip. Heat and humidity that will make an alligator waddle to shade. We still showing up tho. Just got to get to September… open 8-6 Monday-Saturday. 10-5 on Sunday.
