An architectural model made shown chronologically in reverse...

This step-by-step diary documents how our team created this schematic design model of our pavilion at Violet Cove, Mastic Beach in Suffolk County, New York. Reflecting the county’s investment in sustainable design, both for the community and for the environment, our project will sponsor active relationships between the waterfront and natural landscape. At a time of environmental danger for the community it will serve, pavilion is designed to mitigate and adapt to coastal flooding. The pavilion and reconstructed is scheduled to begin construction in 2027. We thank our design partners Nelson Pope Voorhis, Nelson + Pope, , , and Ellana, Inc.

Our Carmel Place is now a decade old! It feels like only yesterday that we won the adAPT NYC competition with our unique take on affordable housing. We’re proud that in the years since its completion - and in an era where we are grappling with demographic shifts in the city as much as ever - Carmel Place is still celebrated as a housing reference point and cited for its groundbreaking use of modular construction. Thank you to our partners Monadnock Development and the NYC Department of Housing Preservation and Development for realizing this project with us.

Located in Manhattan, Carmel Place is New York City’s first microapartment building. To address the city’s trend towards smaller households, the project tests the viability of reducing the minimum apartment size while balancing the need for greater social space. Generous shared amenities are dispersed throughout the building to encourage interaction between neighbors, while apartment interiors offer abundant light, fresh air, high ceilings, and significant storage space.

Reality versus rendering...

As the last of the snow disappears (fingers crossed), we were surprised to see so much accumulation across the corrugated stainless-steel canopy of our ResilienCity Park Pavilion. We hadn’t anticipated that when we conceived of our winter-weather rendering.

We are proud to announce that Mimi Hoang has been elevated to the AIA College of Fellows, in recognition of her national impact in advancing design excellence for communities, in practice and academia.

As we look forward to the achievements still to come, here is a brief look back onto the making of this dedicated architect, teacher, and advocate (and sometimes water-bearer of green bamboo).

Staten Island Chuck – ranked as the most accurate prognosticating groundhog to date – saw his shadow today. As we all prepare for six more weeks of winter, nARCHITECTS is gearing up to submit 100% CDs for our S.I. Zoo renovation.

nARCHITECTS is working with the Staten Island Zoo to transform the arrival experience to the park, along with new animal exhibits and immersive play areas, reframing the zoo for exploration and experiential learning for children.

It’s been 20 years! We’re celebrating the anniversary of Switch Building & Gallery – our first ground-up building. Housing floor-through apartments, a duplex penthouse, and an art gallery at the ground and cellar levels, Switch Building is now a familiar sight in Manhattan’s Lower East Side. Its design is distinguished by an angled galvalume steel facade which switches back and forth to allow residents views up and down Norfolk Street below. Now, as at the time of its completion, the design balances an iconic presence with strong connections to local context.

Just a few items left to complete on our Orchard Beach Maintenance & Operations Building, one of the first completed projects arising out of the NYC Department of Design & Construction’s pilot Design-Build Program. Supporting NYC Parks staff in the Bronx, the building adapts to the seasonal cycles of their work – from serving beachgoers in summer to winterizing the sand in colder weather.
