Our Kennedy Library Renovation is featured in American Libraries Magazine’s 2026 Library Design Showcase, highlighting innovative new and renovated libraries across the country.

At Cal Poly SLO, the renovation reimagines a 200,000-square-foot library for the digital age, prioritizing space for students, staff, and faculty. The design improves access to services, collaboration and study spaces, while flexible exhibition and gathering spaces create opportunities for connection.

An exterior envelope upgrade and new mechanical systems improve thermal comfort while reducing energy consumption by 30%. Clear circulation pathways and intuitive access to resources, technology, and all-gender restrooms further support a welcoming and inclusive environment.

What happens when a library is designed around how people actually browse?

Our work with Deschutes Public Library is helping answer that question. At the new Central Library at Stevens Ranch in Bend, Oregon, we partnered with the library team to rethink everything from the organization of books to the design of the shelves and the way people move through the collection.

The result is a library that feels more like a bookstore—inviting people to browse, linger, discover something unexpected, and come back again.

Since implementing Wayfinder, the percentage of the collection checked out at any given time has grown from about 20% to nearly 30%. Adult nonfiction circulation has increased from 15% to 27%, too.

As Miller Hull Partner Ruth Baleiko, FAIA, LEED AP shares in Fast Company, we designed “little eddies” of books and activity rather than rows of shelves, creating more opportunities for discovery throughout the library.

Redmond Library and Newhouse Replacement Building are finalists in the Metropolis Magazine Planet Positive Awards, which celebrate the people, projects, products, and ideas advancing a more sustainable, healthy, and equitable built environment.

Redmond Library is a finalist in the Civic category. Designed as a true civic living room, the two-story mass timber library more than doubles the size of the previous facility, creating flexible spaces for learning, creativity, and connection across generations. The LEED Platinum, all-electric building is designed to achieve net-zero energy, with a rooftop photovoltaic array sized to meet 100% of its annual energy demand.

The Newhouse Replacement Building is a finalist in the Overall Decarbonization category. Located on Washington State’s historic Capitol Campus, the project combines material reuse, locally sourced mass timber, and high-performance systems to significantly reduce its carbon impact. Newhouse reduces upfront embodied carbon by 52% compared to a conventional steel-and-concrete LEED baseline and is now a fully electrified, net-zero-ready building.

We're thrilled to share that Torrey Pines Fire Station and the Kennedy Library Transformation were recognized at last night's AIA San Diego Design Awards, celebrating design excellence through the lens of sustainability, inclusion, and resilience.

Torrey Pines Fire Station was designed around the health and safety of firefighters and the surrounding community. A three-zone layout helps reduce exposure to carcinogens, while healthy materials, daylight, natural ventilation, and indoor/outdoor spaces support firefighter wellbeing. The station is also the first in the region to include an all-electric fire apparatus, serving as a prototype for future City of San Diego stations.

The Kennedy Library Transformation reimagines Cal Poly SLO's 200,000-square-foot library to better support students, faculty, and staff in the digital age. The renovation prioritizes access to services, collaboration and study spaces while upgrading the building envelope and mechanical systems to improve thermal comfort and reduce energy consumption by 30%.
