After decades being influenced and insprired by, and adding onto and renovating building influenced and inspire by The Sea Ranch, I finally made it there for spring break with . It was worth the wait.

The final final touches are nearly complete at our Queen Anne DADU project, a neatly 4-year labor of love and collaboration with homeowner . Filling in the last backyard on an upzoned Seattle alley, we wanted to build something that pushed the boundaries of what was possible in our need for housing density. We are excited to see this filled with furniture and life and post more soon.

On the boards: of a two unit residential building on a very small lot across from Cal Anderson Park on Seattle’s Capitol Hill. Our design takes advantage of 🤞🏼soon-to-be-approved zoning changes that will allow more density on this challenging site. We are already working closely with an arborist to protect the lovely mature street trees that will provide a natural privacy screen. Project team .titian

Another from our archives. A large family house tucked into a hillside overlooking Mount Si, complete with a seasonal waterfall. We learned a lot from John Yeon on this one.

Another project from our archives. This was a shop for a highly sought after mechanic north of who works on a a few cars each year from his home garage. The building needed to fit within a suburban residential context, but still have the simple volume and scale of a working garage. We put the office space to the front of the building to add complexity to the street facade, and moved the double height car lift space to the back.

More from from the shoot at our Redmond project. The DNA of the generic rambler first built on this wooded acreage is still clear. But our addition design, and our client’s thoughtful collections brought a connection to the natural surroundings and a richness to the interiors. We didn’t try to erase the ranch house, but we also didn’t defer to it.

We have been lucky to work with many incredibly talented interior designers on our projects. But many of our clients want to select their own furniture and finishes. In our Redmond addition project, our client had an incredible talent for interiors, and photographing their home was a delight. An avid collector and estate sale picker, she has filled the home we designed with layers of texture, history and meaning. It is a refreshing break from the minimalism we usually encourage. I was reminded of visiting the Eames house in person, which is so perfect in its layered, cluttered imperfection. We are incredibly fortunate to design homes for people who end up teaching us how to design homes.

Though I was only there for about a year and a half, working in Frank Gehry’s office was one of the most profound experiences of my life.
I landed in LA by chance, and I still don’t know why they hired me. We weren’t supposed to like Frank’s work in my architecture school—it was a flashy spectacle.

But living in LA and working in his office quickly proved that bias wrong. His process and his work were deeply rooted in the best architectural principles: sensitivity to context, and masterful understanding of scale, a pragmatic approach to the building’s function, and an ability to stir the soul with material and light.
His contribution to the built environment was truly genius. I was a tiny part of his office, and I was damn lucky.
Pictures are from the Fondation LVMH in Paris from a trip a few years ago. If you notice a rain downspout, that’s me. (Of course they put the Seattle guy on the rain downspouts. And I did do a couple other things while I was there.)
