On a quiet Seattle street, Cedar Cove reinterprets midcentury design with a low-slung roofline, clerestory windows, and a seamless connection to the outdoors. Inside, the home reveals an unexpected volume.

A skylit entry and continuous rough-sawn cedar wall establish a warm, natural material palette. White oak, maple, cedar, and blue tile evoke the Pacific Northwest landscape and the wood + water theme.

South-facing living spaces unfold beneath a vaulted ceiling, with expansive glazing framing private garden views and intimate connections to mature trees and native evergreen plantings. Generous decks and gravel pathways extend everyday living into the surrounding garden.

L A N D S C A P E D E S I G N — lush landscape at this greater Seattle area garden.

With over 700 plantings, the landscape and hardscape elements were conceived as a unified composition. Throughout the grounds, an attention to craft, placement, and details blurs the line between architecture and landscape.

MOUNTAIN VIEWS Within a compact plumbing plan—that can easily be kept from freezing—each floor of this mountain retreat incorporates a stunning bathroom. A luxurious wet room with a soaking tub (and a view) inhabits one level, while immediately below, a shower room offers an equally beautiful scene beyond.

Heritage Six
The Heritage Six is a six-unit stacked flat illustrating how we make room for new affordable, equitable, and sustainable housing options within existing neighborhoods.

Our goal is to replace one old house with a higher-density building that feels neighborhood friendly, is repeatable, demonstrates the value of pragmatic simplicity with massing, and leverages the sense of craft and detail from the historic tradition.

It is three-story with two 900 SF homes per story, linked with a single central staircase.

Each home has two bedrooms/two bathrooms, with an open living room, dining room and full-size kitchen. Plus a 150SF room-sized porch.

Beacon
Honorable Mention, Beacon, is a three-bedroom/two-bath home. The design features living, dining, kitchen, and a suite on the ground level for accessibility. It has a recessed entry and an open stairwell topped with a skylight.

The design is configured for off-site construction. The plan has twin entry locations and can be flipped end-to-end as well as mirrored.

S W I P E for B E F O R E This renovation of a century-old adobe-brick farmhouse in rural Spain creates a tranquil oasis for a multi-national family committed to maintaining their connection to the hometown of their grandparents.

The house had been abandoned for more than a generation when the project began, but the adobe walls, unmilled wood beams, and traditional tile roof were still repairable.

The great room connects to the enclosed patio through an oversized sliding glass door. An extendable awning and new support cables for the legacy grape arbor turn the patio into an outdoor area that doubles as the home’s living room.

As they always have, the meter-thick adobe walls temper the extremes of the harsh climate, keeping the house cool in summer and warm in winter.

Green Design
- Reuse of century-old adobe brick structure massively reduces carbon footprint compared to new construction.
- Maintains the passive solar qualities of the traditional vernacular architecture, such as mass walls, and passive winter heating via southern orientation with summer shading.
- Air-to-Water Heat Pump provides radiant underfloor heating & cooling throughout the home
- 100% LED Lighting

This Methow Valley escape is the perfect place for family and friends to gather amongst the natural beauty.

The home’s exterior, with durable steel and cement, is firewise and blends into the muted tones of its environment.

At a single-story, from nearby hiking trails and roads, the home almost disappears from view. The roof’s design retains snow and keeps drifts from piling up against the siding and windows, while taking advantage of the insulating properties of snow.

The heart of the home is the living room, dining area, and kitchen. Expansive windows and glass doors frame views from this space designed for practicality and purpose. Blackened steel is a dramatic backdrop for the kitchen. Contrasting warm wood adds to the distinct vibe. With the adjacent outdoor patio, the custom-designed table on wheels to be easily rolled outside.

A rock and concrete perimeter, weathering steel siding, and a metal roof designed to retain snow all contribute to fire resistance and low-maintenance longevity.
