This Preservation Month, we'd like to highlight Postmark Center for the Arts.

The Auburn community came together to revitalize the historic 1939 Post Office into a flexible community arts and learning space. The project team found inspiration in the building’s original structure. By uncovering the building’s original bones, removing column wraps, dropped ceilings, and solid walls, JA created an open, light-filled central gallery. Restoring the masonry, windows, envelope, and illuminated cupola brought the building back to life.

Since the reopening in September 2023, Postmark Center for the Arts has become a creative hub for visitors of all ages, hosting watercolor, jewelry-making, spoken word, music, and rotating art exhibits!

"One of the great parts about this project is that we weren’t approaching it [with the intent] to build and then sell."

"We said, ‘We’re going to build it and live in it, and we’re going to stay here for a long time.’ That lets us think about things with a much longer-term perspective." - Chad Dale on Shared Roof

We are delighted to sponsor the upcoming Cohousing Association of the US Summit here in Seattle. JA Partners Megan McKay and Ray Johnston will be presenting about Shared Roof, a dynamic, unique mixed-use project in Seattle's Phinney Ridge neighborhood.

We’re grateful to for their support of The Cohousing Summit: Seattle 🙌

For nearly 40 years, JA has been designing welcoming, community-focused living environments that bring people together. Their work reflects what cohousing is all about: thoughtful design that supports connection, interaction, and everyday life.

One example is Shared Roof, a unique mixed-use project that combines retail and multifamily living under one green roof. It’s an inspiring model of how design and development can work together to create vibrant, connected neighborhoods.

Join us in Seattle to learn from leaders like Johnston Architects and explore what’s possible in community-rooted housing.

“The homeowners are a small family and they wanted to be close together so we kind of shrunk it down. It’s not a very big house. The great room is generous because that’s where they spend most of their time, all together. The auxiliary rooms, offices, and bedrooms are quite small." - Mary Johnston FAIA in Green Building & Design

Green Building & Design's Lark Breen recently interviewed JA Founding Partner Mary Johnston about Pointing Dog, a new residence in Washington's Methow Valley. Besides ensuring the house met the spatial needs of the family, JA also incorporated elements from their travels and hobbies, such as Nepalese prayer wheels and a repurposed ski chairlift.

Johnston Architects’ Pointing Dog is a beautiful tribute to all things wood, deep in the Cascade Mountains.

JA Partner Megan McKay will be speaking about cohousing at the upcoming AIA Seattle Future of Housing event! We look forward to learning from our pears and hearing from Mayor Wilson about our community's approach to solving the housing crisis and Getting to Abundance.

We're thrilled to welcome Mayor Katie B. Wilson for opening remarks at the 2026 Housing Design Forum!

A longtime transit advocate and community organizer, Wilson co-founded the Transit Riders Union and then led the organization for over a decade. Wilson approaches the role of Mayor from the perspective of a coalition builder and has assembled a diverse and experienced team ready to deliver responsible, effective governance and make progress on our city's biggest challenges. She rents an apartment in Capitol Hill which she shares with her husband and young daughter.

Join us as we examine how we can continue to promote a future of abundant, high-quality, diverse, and sustainable housing options in Seattle and beyond.
