We’re honored to see the project recognized for its strong connection to the surrounding landscape: “Expansive windows in the main reading room and direct park access keep the focus on the surrounding natural environment, while a roof system made of dowel-laminated timber adds warmth and texture throughout the open layout.”

We’re happy to celebrate International Dog Day with our team here! We believe deeply that all dogs, pets, and animals deserve to be loved, cared for, and have an opportunity to find their forever homes. For the past 35 years, JA and our project partners have collaborated to develop resources supporting the ongoing work of animal welfare organizations across the region.

JA has a special place in our hearts for the canine companions among us, with our office brightened and enlivened by the energetic day-to-day escapades of five dogs on staff that consistently keep us on our toes. We’re excited to observe this special day for our four-legged friends and continue our work in the important areas of animal shelter and veterinary clinic design and development. We hope you enjoy the day with your special ones!

Laurelhurst is in Custom Builder! In "His Architect, Her Builder, and a House Designed As It Was Built," read about architecture firm Johnston Architects and general contractor McKinstry Stauffer Yang Construction's collaborative process to bring this project to life.

We were proud to collaborate with Opsis Architecture on Oak Lodge Library, the centerpiece of a new civic campus that brings together the renovated historic Concord School (now the Concord Community Center) with a new park, playground, and public gathering spaces.

Exposed dowel-laminated timber, carefully controlled daylight, and strong indoor-outdoor connections create a warm and welcoming interior. An open, adaptable plan supports intuitive wayfinding and a range of experiences for children, teens, and adults, while expansive views keep the library closely connected to the surrounding landscape and activity of the park.

Ballard Tunnel Effluent Pump Station / Seattle WA

Jeffrey Veregge's story: Artist Jeffrey Veregge’s origin story describes a love between the moon and the Octopus Woman, expressed through the 20-foot sculpture on site and its relationship to the lit tower beyond.

A S’KLALLUM TALE: SEDUCTION OF THE MOON
Octopus women, a queen of the Salish sea would go out each night and dance while gathering food for herself under the light of the Moon.

Every night while The Moon shown brightly, she would playfully dance around his reflection to show her love and gratitude for helping her hunt.

Her movements were a ballet that spoke to directly to the Moon’s soul.

For hours she would perform under his light, until she had her fill and then she would sleepily return to her home.

Watching her graceful movements, a beautiful seduction of motion, the Moon became smitten with Octopus Woman. He was so enraptured by her dance and beauty that he would blow her countless kisses that would land gently upon the skin of the emerald sea.

However being in love, he did not think of what his kisses might do and didn’t realize that some of the sea creatures would absorb the light he sent from his heart, and as a result that is why certain fish and plankton glow at night and in the deep.
