Summer isn’t over yet! Herbs are still thriving in my garden so what better way to share the bounty with w**e. Come enjoy delicious w**es Sebastiano’s Natural Wines this Friday the 11th between 5-8pm paired with herbs from my harvest. It’s a lovely way to introduce new flavors and food pairing ideas with a twist.

Call me a plant therapist because sometimes I have to talk people into doing the best thing for the plants…. Which included cutting them back. ✂️✂️ sometimes the best thing you can do for a plant is cut back, letting a plant grow for many years without doing this will cause you to get overwhelmed with an overgrown plant and then you start having to make very difficult cuts. So start when the plant is still small to maintain the shape for the size that you want in your yard.

It’s the smellest, tastiest time of year! Garlic harvesting! Harvest once the lower 3-5 leaves are brown and dried, clean off the dirt, cut the roots to 1/2” long, and allow to dry for 2-8 weeks in a shaded dry area. Drying time will depend on heat, air circulation, location but you can always use it right away.

Nature can certainly make gardening fun but I don’t mind loosing from fruit to the 🐦 I have 8 blueberry plants so I get enough to eat for fun and freeze for later. If I wanted to prevent the birds from snacking I would need to net the plants but I have so many in different spots that it wouldn’t be as attractive.

Inventions that were first created in nature. Weeds are often given a bad rap but while they can certainly be invasive, at the same time it could spark inspiration. Stickyw**d or cleavers as they can be called have loads of edible and herbal uses including bites and stings from a poultice. Its fruit can be used as a coffee alternative, and the root can be used for dye. This plant also inspired the creation of Velcro. In the PNW it’s considered an invasive w**d although it’s not classified as a regulated species.

How the heck do I trim back shrubs??? Well it’s all about pockets and windows! Cutting in gaps that allow light into the center of shrubs is one of the best ways to keep the current shape without too much noticeable thinning. Go lightly with the pruners and stop after each cut to make sure you’re not taking too much. It’s like a haircut… you can take too much and it will eventually grow back but it might look worse before it gets better.

Give me all your berry attention 🚨these might be the best berry to grow for small space gardeners. The Logenberry vine fruits like a raspberry or blackberry on 2nd year canes but can be trellised along a fence and doesn’t spread like raspberry plants tend to do. Prolific and reliable fruits each year when you save a cane from the year before to harvest from the next year.
