Northwest Flower and Garden Show 2026, Practical Garden. This year I wanted to have a Practical Magic witchy garden, full of edible and medicinal plants to use throughout the year. The driftwood was found on the local beaches in West Seattle and Camano Island and used as the potting table and art. The show continues through February 22nd this year and well worth a visit to see the incredible gardens! Huge thanks to for the Freyr trellis, for the fruit trees and shrubs, and for the exotic edible plants that really round out the space.

Let the repurposed goods be given another chance to be used! That old lamp from my college years is now serving a better purpose by adding grow lights into the brightest room in my house for some indoor veggies. Between the sun and the lamp it’s also next to a heaters so the veggies get the heat they need to grow. Fingers crossed these babies are in show shape for the next month! Using the clips from to trellis the plants temporarily to the curtain rod…. It’s not perfect but it’s a low cost solution for me.

What the 🌴?! This has to be the strangest thing I’ve ever found on a beach in Washington… a coconut! Anyone aware of any palm trees nearby because that sounds like a great vacation spot right now.
Should I keep this coconut for the garden I’m putting together?

🥶🥶🥶 Brrr... weather got you feeling meh about heading outside??? Let's get hygge inside and give our plants some TLC instead! Clearing out dead leaves and giving them a fresh new look can be super therapeutic. I'm loving the way my pothos and philodendron are taking over the family room, it's like a little indoor jungle! Time to give them a refresh for the new year so they start out all “fresh and so clean, clean”.

Salt in the air! And in the soil, and in the plants… living in a coastal city the water impacts our soil in a huge way. Winter storms aren’t fun necessarily to be out in during the winter but it takes a toll on the spring plantings. By testing the pH and soil health BEFORE any new plants go in you can save future plant loss by amending to balance out the salt. It’s always important to think about weather in all seasons when planting and pick the right plants for the space.

It might be raining outside but it’s the PERFECT time to prep for next years plantings! In King County we have a fantastic resource in the with soil testing. With a lifetime of up to 5 FREE testing sites per eligible parcel!!! These are sent out to the lab and you get the results back in 3-6 weeks. Huge win for new residents to the area or properties looking for some help in how to improve the soil quality or conditions. Highly recommended for anyone looking for something to do now while dreaming up their garden for next year! 🫶🏼
