We love when design tells a story 💕

The Founding Farmers aesthetic is a modern twist on the spirit of the farmhouse. At Alexandria Lumber & Light leaned into playful heritage details, craftsmanship, whimsy, and familiar materials and forms brought to life in fun, surprising ways.
These photos capture some of our favorite moments in the space: American hardwoods, elaborate wallcoverings, honest materials, gorgeous custom lighting, and a sense of joy in every detail. 💛

Located just minutes for Washington, DC, Founding Farmers Alexandria spans about 9,200 square feet, with 234 dining seats and 20 bar stools. The restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner, plus brunch on weekends and select holidays. A bakery & café offers house-made coffee, chocolate, pastries and sweet treats to go.

From the moment we laid eyes on you in , we knew—it was love…the deep, soul-shaking, “we need to dedicate an entire Pinterest board to this” kind of love.

You are a masterpiece. The perfect blend of rugged charm and effortless elegance. The kind of space that makes us want to whisper sweet nothings to exposed wooden beams and write poetry about the way natural light hits a well-placed leather armchair. And don’t even get us started on the artwork ::swoon::

So, here we are, heart in hand, asking the only question that truly matters… Will you marry us?

According to experts, pretty is overrated. The best rooms right now have at least one “WTF moment.”

“I think it might be difficult for some people to digest but that is also the beauty of it,” says New York and Palm Beach-based designer . “Every home should have pieces that make people stop, think, and start a conversation. These bring energy and personality to a space.“

We consider one of our longest standing clients, Farmers Restaurant Group, to be a pioneer in this movement. In each property we’ve designed with them, we have always incorporated moments of whimsy in original pieces commissioned from artists spanning the US. From brightly colored animal sculptures to a 360 degree toile mural of continental army bunnies, each of their restaurants nails this “jolie-laide” trend. Swipe right to see what we mean!

Designing intimate spaces is all about lighting and materials. In this cozy private booth tucked away at Farmers Fishers Bakers, warm light streams through the window and reflects off the beautiful wood ceiling.

On top of the ceiling’s scandi cabin aesthetic we layered in a colorful pheasant wallpaper and plaid upholstery, which together tell an outdoorsy story that feels both preppy and whimsical.

Each element is meticulously layered, proving that small spaces, when thoughtfully curated, can evoke a sense of both comfort and refinement.
