Autohaus is a full renovation and addition of a one-story garage, constructed in the 1800’s, located in a historic Washington DC alley. The clients, a young couple, enjoy working on and displaying their car collection, so this project merges their favorite hobby with their new living space. It also preserves the original use of the building as a garage with the new use as a residence.

Framework featured in Architecture DC’s spring issue: “The Annual Residential Issue”

The strategy for this renovation was to use a series of “frames” which act as thresholds. Framing interior and exterior views as one moves throughout the space.

Alley Armor | Washington DC

This outdoor deck and enclosure is perched atop an existing rear garage behind a DC row house. The Owners requested a private space for spending time and entertaining, with shade for the intense summer heat. A 6-story apartment building sits behind it across the alley, exposing the back and top of the deck to all the windows units.

KUBE’s solution was to create a protective “armor” that shields the deck from outside views, but allows for viewing out from the inside. The roof is solid at the back, keeping the deck cool in summer, but becomes increasingly open as it gets closer to the house

Views of a northwest DC row house that was completely renovated on all three levels. The owners requested a warm, modern, light-filled home, with the main spaces open to each other for ease of entertainment. To accomplish this we removed all the dividing walls on the first floor to allow light to come from both ends of the row house.

A custom display unit made of steel and wood was designed around a new gas fireplace. Steel shelves above are braced with steel rods that are further tied to the unit below via a folded steel shelf. A LED strip in the ceiling accents the full display below. The playful lines of the ceiling pendant in the foreground are a purposeful contrast to the rectilinear lines of the fireplace display.

A uniform palette of warm colors, wood floors, exposed brick, steel, and glass unify the three levels.
