My first caprifig! The male fig that makes all the pollen and is the home to the fig wasp (when there are colonies of fig wasps) . Well I have one now and this variety is called Saleeb and originated from UC Riverside. The fig wasp doesn’t exist here in North Carolina - in fact the fig wasp only exists in California in the United States - therefore I will have to hand pollinate with this male fig and som un ripe female figs!

Are you familiar with the male fig?! Let me know!

What if I told you one of the most popular foods to eat is also one of the easiest ones to grow?! Potatoes couldn’t be easier to grow, easy to know when to harvest, and easy to eat! Plus, there are so many varieties out there that have some great health benefits

Potatoes! Check how easy it is for me to harvest them. It’s like an Easter egg hunt in the soil.

Have you grown potatoes before? what kind of potatoes have you grown? What are your favorite potato varieties?

How does your garden help YOU grow?

Hey fig fam. I will say there’s nothing more grounding and resetting than being in the garden. If you have any garden space - regardless of size - it can be a great location to meditate and reset. Figs are looking amazing , fruit trees are lush and the garden is bursting with produce. Life is good.

The goal is to get fruit in all 12 months of the year. June is particularly easy here in zone 8B coastal North Carolina! Blackberries, blueberries, strawberries - the list goes on and on, but the blackberries are a must have here on the East Coast!

Are you growing blackberries? Are they ripening for you yet?

They do well in so many soils. They do well in dappled light and in full sun. They do well in more acidic oils, and neutral soils. A well rounded fruit! Enjoy!

Fig of the week

Rigato del Salento

This fig is one of the most prolific and vigorous Figs that I grow. The best part is that it’s a variegated, honey Fig. It even readily produces two figs per node.

it’s a little tricky to root, but it is a fantastic variety worth having because of how prolific in abundant it produces Figs. It even makes a delicious breba crop. I’m only in year three with this tree, but I’m looking forward to future growth with it!

Have you guys heard of this variety? If so, has it grown well for you?

How are your Fig Tree propagations going this year? I’m on round two of my propagations and they’re coming out great!

However, the greenhouse is getting quite hot and I may need to pause my propagation for the season and grow out the tree inventory that I have.

these trays are fantastic from All About the Garden. Check the link in my bio

I can get a lot of trees propagated in a small space and a potted easily into their new homes.

from propagation tray to containers to the nursery under 40% shade cloth, it’s a beautiful process as they work their way up into their own full grown trees, where they will be planted in homes across the country

Hey Fig Fam!

Repotting a fig tree can be the foundation for a fantastic growing season ahead. Well balanced soil medium, good fertilizer all around a happy fig tree is a recipe for success.

How are your figs doing this spring?! Are they ready for the year ahead? You’ll want to pot your figs every other year or so depending on their growth habit!
