We’re incredibly honoured to share that Open + Shut has received an Auckland Architecture Award from

Perched on the hills of Waiheke Island, this home was designed as a place of retreat. Protective from the elements when closed, yet open to light, sea breezes and sweeping views when unfolded. The house balances resilience with generosity, creating spaces that can expand and contract with the rhythms of everyday life.

What began as a thoughtful response to site, climate and way of life became a home that is energy efficient, adaptable and deeply connected to its landscape. We’re so grateful to our wonderful clients for trusting us on the journey, and to the builders, consultants and craftspeople who helped bring it to life.

A huge thank you to the awards jury and congratulations to all of the talented architects and teams recognised this year.

Today our studio is raising a glass to thoughtful design, collaboration, and houses that know when to open up and when to hold you close.

The project began with a simple brief: create a home full of wonder, where every space feels discovered rather than simply entered.

From there, the design unfolded through an exploration of light, sequence and flow. Spaces open and compress, connections are revealed gradually, and moments of surprise are woven throughout the home. Like turning the pages of a favourite book, the experience is layered, intimate and full of delight.

This project has always been about delight. Spaces that unfold unexpectedly, light that dances across surfaces, and rooms that reveal themselves one page at a time.

Designing homes is a collaborative process, and seeing a project like this captured in print is a chance to pause and celebrate the many conversations, sketches, decisions and moments of courage that brought it to life.

A home designed around the simple pleasures of everyday life.

For this busy family of four, the brief was to create spaces that felt warm, welcoming, and connected to the things they love most: cooking, gathering, gardening, and sharing meals together.

At the heart of the home sits a sculptural kitchen, where blush pink marble, dark oak cabinetry, and rich textures create a space that is both hardworking and beautiful. A hidden scullery supports everything from preserving seasonal harvests to the realities of family life, while light-filled living spaces flow effortlessly between old and new.

We love how this project balances character and contemporary design, creating interiors that feel timeless, playful, and personal.

ROOM WITH A VIEW | Mission Bay

Perched above Mission Bay and capturing sweeping views across the Hauraki Gulf to Rangitoto Island, Room with a View is a home designed to celebrate its remarkable setting.

Spanning three levels, the design responds to the site's elevation, creating a series of light-filled living spaces that connect seamlessly to the outlook beyond. Natural stone cladding is paired with dark louvres and warm taupe metal cladding, creating a refined material palette that feels both timeless and contemporary.

Every aspect of the home has been carefully considered to maximise views, natural light and privacy, while delivering a calm and sophisticated living environment for modern family life.

For us, great residential architecture is about more than creating a beautiful home. It's about designing spaces that enhance the way people live every day and make the most of the opportunities a site presents.

Room with a View is a perfect example of how thoughtful design can transform an exceptional location into an extraordinary place to live.

Woodland Dance 🌿

A villa renovation in Grey Lynn shaped by light, texture, and the quiet poetry of reuse.

Rather than erase the existing lean-to addition, we chose to work with it. The original structure became a transitional space between old and new, connecting the villa to a contemporary rear addition through a series of soft curves and layered moments.

Curved walls, flush thresholds, floating vanities, and gentle transitions were seamlessly woven into the architectural language, creating spaces that feel intuitive, calm, and beautifully human.

Inside, green tiles, walnut cabinetry, slate floors, and soft flecked surfaces create a sense of dappled light filtering through trees. Skylights pull sunlight deep into the home, shifting throughout the day like shadows moving across a forest floor.

The Lookout was designed for a rare kind of site.
Expansive views, dramatic landscape, and complete immersion in the surrounding environment demanded an architectural response that felt connected to place.

Long, grounded forms follow the contours of the land, while carefully framed glazing captures shifting light, distant horizons, and the changing coastal weather. Materiality was selected to age gracefully within the landscape, creating a home that feels timeless.

Spaces unfold slowly and intentionally, balancing privacy, shelter, and openness at every turn. The result is a home that feels calm, elevated, and loved.

Architecture designed not just for living, but for belonging.

A new city house designed for a tightly held Auckland suburb, currently in Resource Consent stage.

The home balances elegance and restraint through a grounded material palette of stone cladding to the lower level and dark metal cladding above, creating a timeless silhouette that settles naturally into its dense urban setting.

Carefully shaped around two courtyards, the house opens and shifts with the sun throughout the day, allowing light, warmth and connection to move through every level of the home.

A considered response to city living, where privacy, sun and outdoor connection become the architecture itself.

This new house designed by Rogan Nash architects is centred around privacy and connection. Wrapped around a century-old pōhutukawa, the architecture creates a quiet world of its own where family life unfolds around a sheltered courtyard, sunlit interiors and spaces designed to stay connected.

Dark, moody materials give way to warm walnut, textured stone and pockets of unexpected colour. From the kitchen, conversations drift easily between the lounge, lawn and outdoor dining space. Every room feels linked, yet private.

Designed as a sanctuary for modern family life, this city house holds people close while creating moments of calm within the rhythm of Auckland living. 🌿
