The Colinton Lego Building Challenge is officially underway to raise funds to help complete the Colinton Village Hub in Spylaw Park for Colinton Village Hub

We’re inviting kids from Colinton and the surrounding areas to get creative and design a brilliant Lego building for their community.

What would you put in it?

Could it be somewhere to meet, play, learn, help or grow? Or could it be something completely different that would make your community an even better place?

Imagine it. Build it. Explain it.

Build your idea in Lego (or if you don’t have Lego , get creative), take 2–3 photos of your finished model and tell us a little about your building - what’s inside, who would use it and what makes it special.

There are two age categories, P1–P3 and P4–P7, with some fantastic Lego vouchers to be won, including a £50 Friendly Planet Building Prize.

Entry is a £5 donation per model, and 100% of entry donations go towards finishing the Colinton Village Hub.

We launched the challenge at the Bonaly Primary School assembly today, and we can’t wait to see what our young Lego builders come up with! The enthusiasm from the children today was amazing to see, so many hands up 🙌 asking great questions.

All the details are on the poster. Scan the QR code to enter your child’s model, and the family and friends can also support the fundraiser by sponsoring a brick.

Small bricks. Big ideas. A brighter Colinton.

From two separate rooms and a rear single storey annex to one light-filled heart of the home.

The existing spaces were brought together and extended to create a generous open-plan kitchen and dining area, transforming the way the house connects with the garden.

Large sliding doors and rooflights flood the space with natural light, while soft green cabinetry from Riddle & Coghill Interiors , oak parquet flooring and brass details bring warmth and character throughout.

What was once a collection of disconnected rooms is now one cohesive light filled space designed for cooking, eating and spending family time together.

A little idea for our studio window in Colinton…

I’ve been looking at the ground floor window of MDA Studio and wondering whether we could occasionally do something a little different with it.

I quite like having something in the window that changes from time to time and gives people passing by something interesting, or perhaps slightly unexpected, to look at.

And that got me thinking.

It might be nice to occasionally have a piece of someone else’s work in the studio.

Perhaps a sculpture, a piece of furniture, ceramics, lighting, an interesting object, or simply something really well made.

I’m not looking to turn the studio into a shop or a gallery. In fact, I’d rather it didn’t feel like either.

I just like the idea of occasionally having an interesting object or two sitting in the studio and giving the person who made it some visibility at the same time.

There is no charge, no commission and no grand plan behind it. If somebody sees something they like and it leads to a conversation with the maker, or even a sale, then brilliant, but that is not really the point.

For me it is more about the studio, the window and having something interesting for people passing through Colinton and the studio to enjoy.

It might be one piece for a few weeks. It might be something completely unexpected.

It is really just an idea, and I thought I would put it out there and see what happens.

So if you make something that you think might sit rather nicely in an architecture studio, or if this immediately makes you think of somebody else’s work, I’d love to hear from you.

Meetings this week at the Spylaw Shed project, catching up with and and various subcontractors as the building continues to make great progress.

The roof is now nearing completion, and it’s been great to see one of my favourite design details come to life. The deeply recessed first floor creates a strong horizontal shadow line between the roof and the existing stonework, giving the building a real sense of depth and helping to define its character.

Inside, the project is moving on just as well, with first-fix electrical works well underway and the internal spaces starting to take shape.

Every site presents its own challenges. The best designs turn those challenges into opportunities.

For this project, the garden sat higher than the existing house and, as a semi detached property, we also had to carefully consider the impact on the neighbouring home.

Rather than forcing a standard solution, we designed the extension to step with the site. The floor levels follow the natural change in height and the building gently staggers down towards the neighbouring property to reduce the impact on the neighbours daylight and sunlight. The roof is angled towards the garden to maximise the views from the new extension to the garden.

The result is a bright open plan kitchen, dining and living space with beautiful views across the garden and the trees beyond.

Good design is about more than creating extra space. It is about responding to the site, respecting your neighbours and making every part of your home work better.

If your home has a sloping garden or challenging constraints, there is almost always a thoughtful design solution. Working with an architect can help release the full potential of a site.

It’s amazing to see the progress being made on this Grade B-listed farmhouse in South Edinburgh.

The old conservatory has been removed and replaced with a contemporary extension with an asymmetrical pitched roof leading to a large fixed rooflight, creating a striking contrast between old and new. Stonework from the original structure has been reclaimed and reused as the façade of the new extension, helping to seamlessly tie the historic building to the modern addition.

The use of frameless corner glazing and large sliding doors will bring a clean, contemporary aesthetic while maximising natural light and views of the surrounding landscape.

This project is now entering its final stages, and it’s been fantastic to watch the transformation. Looking forward to sharing the completed results.

From tired to transformed (if you do manage to watch to the end you will see the before photo’s)

This North Berwick seafront double upper apartment has undergone a complete renovation from the ground up, stripped back to the bare bones and rebuilt into a stunning modern coastal home.

Every detail has been touched throughout the project:

Remodel of the existing layout
Existing dormers reconstructed
Full rewire and replumb
New bathrooms and additional en suite
All new windows with new timber surrounds
New staircase, skirtings and finishes throughout
Fully insulated attic
Complete interior overhaul from top to bottom

We are now into the final stages with carpets going down next week, followed by final snagging, a new front door and gates to complete the transformation.

A huge change for this property and an incredible space overlooking the beautiful North Berwick seafront. Looking forward to sharing the finished results soon.

A little catch-up from last week. Plenty happening between meetings, design work, drawing packages, planning applications, and building warrants.

Last week we had site meetings across a number of projects around the Colinton area, from completion certificates and projects currently on site, to some really exciting large-scale house overhauls that are now nearing completion.

It’s been a busy few months balancing all this design, as well as the new studio fit out, and more importantly, making sure there’s time for family and a bit of balance amongst it all.

Grateful to see so many projects moving forward at once. North Berwick tomorrow to visit a nearly completed project.
