Pip Cheshire launching off a set of precarious, hand-dug steps, down to a site on Bassett Road is an early and lasting memory of my time working with him. Imagine my sheer surprise and wonderment during my first week of employment: how the hell did he just do that?
Pip continued to produce many WTF moments of admirable wonderment over the years, shared with the professionals and students that gathered around him and his energetic and engaging Cheshire smile.
As a courageous maverick and a man gifted with enviable optimism, perseverance and strength, Pip never saw an obstacle too big to overcome.
He was gentle, yet fierce. A Lion of the Zodiac and a Lion within the architectural profession.
There is a space in my heart which I will hold for you.
Go well Mr Cheshire.

In 1996, as an architecture student in Italy, I longed to visit Castelvecchio — a project spoken of as a defining moment in modern conservation architecture. Fate intervened: the Chernobyl disaster occurred, travel plans were upended. Twenty-nine years later, I finally arrived. And the wait was worth every day of anticipation.
