20 YEARS I 2020
LOLA38
LAWRENCEVILLE | PITTSBURGH

Five townhomes. One steep hillside. A new interpretation of a familiar Pittsburgh housing type.

Lola38 responded to the challenging Lawrenceville site by terracing the homes along its natural topography. The traditional organization of a multilevel townhome was reconsidered to prioritize daylight, views, outdoor space, and privacy.

Concrete block, corrugated metal, fiber cement panels, and weathering steel referenced Pittsburgh’s industrial material palette while giving the development its own contemporary identity.

The result was designed to feel new while remaining connected to the scale, materials, and character of its neighborhood.

ARGO AI PITTSBURGH OFFICE
STRIP DISTRICT | PITTSBURGH

As Pittsburgh technology company Argo AI rapidly grew, its new headquarters needed to support both focused technical work and the spontaneous interactions that drive creative thinking.

The design drew inspiration from Pittsburgh’s distinct neighborhoods and the urban patterns of European cities. Workstation neighborhoods were connected by narrow internal streets leading to gathering spaces, lounges, dining areas, meeting rooms, and a central stair designed as a hub for collaboration and company events.

Local artists contributed installations throughout the office, further connecting the workplace to Pittsburgh while giving the growing company an environment distinctly its own.

THE DETECTIVE BUILDING
EAST LIBERTY | PITTSBURGH

The transformation of The Detective Building began with subtraction.

Originally designed in 1972 and later occupied by the Pittsburgh Police Bureau, the building became the East Coast home of Schoolhouse, along with a cafe and three floors of coworking space.

Rather than cover its history, the renovation stripped away later interventions to reveal the strength of the original architecture, materials, and natural light. Outside, a new public plaza, rain garden, seating, bicycle parking, and landscape reconnected the building to the neighborhood.

The project gave a distinctive Pittsburgh building a new life by recognizing the value of what was already there.

20 YEARS I 2017
PENN51
BLOOMFIELD | PITTSBURGH

Located along the Penn Avenue business district between Bloomfield and Garfield, Penn51 reinterpreted the commercial facade of a property that had evolved from three distinct buildings into one.

The design introduced a folded steel panel facade that floats above the existing storefronts, simplifying and unifying the building while adding depth, movement, and visual interest along the busy commercial corridor. Subtle folds extend toward the sidewalk, creating a stronger relationship between the building and the street below.

A smooth, glossy finish reflects the changing sky, street activity, and movement of the neighborhood, allowing the facade itself to respond to its surroundings.

Set within a corridor shaped by ongoing revitalization and a strong arts presence, Penn51 was designed not as an isolated building, but as an active part of the larger Penn Avenue streetscape.

For the last 8 years, mossArchitects’ office has been located within the Penn51 building. We have enjoyed being a part of Penn Avenue’s Art District and have had the opportunity to showcase 44 artists and creative professionals across 32 Unblurred events within our office gallery space.

20 YEARS I 2016
DEER HOLLOW RESIDENCE
MURRYSVILLE I PENNSYLVANIA

Light and landscape drove the design of Deer Hollow Residence.

Set on nearly two wooded acres, the home was carefully positioned along a sloping site to create privacy from the street while opening toward views of a seasonal pond and forest beyond.

The interior was organized across three levels, with daylight and connections to the outdoors extending throughout the house. A dramatic two story great room opened to an expansive deck, while the lower level accommodated multigenerational living.

The architecture was designed not simply to sit on the site, but to continually reconnect the experience of the home with the landscape around it.

20 YEARS I 2015
PENN MATHILDA APARTMENTS
BLOOMFIELD | PITTSBURGH

Penn Mathilda Apartments brought 39 affordable apartments for veterans, along with commercial and community spaces, to a prominent corner in Pittsburgh’s Bloomfield neighborhood.

The residential design challenged expectations of affordable housing through high ceilings, large windows, abundant daylight, and thoughtful interior spaces.

Local art and fabrication were integrated into the architecture through handmade glass pendants, a geometric steel balcony, and a custom bicycle rack. Sustainable building strategies supported energy efficiency, comfort, and long-term performance.

The project demonstrated that thoughtful design, art, sustainability, and dignity belong in housing for everyone.

CHEMISTRY OFFICE
DOWNTOWN I PITTSBURGH

When creative marketing firm Chemistry moved into the historic Oliver Building, its new office needed to feel distinctly its own while taking advantage of the character already present.

Original wood and marble floors were restored, existing walls and ceilings were exposed, and new elements were layered into the space with carefully placed color drawn from the company’s identity.

At the center, an open kitchen and lounge created a place for people to gather, while smaller rooms provided opportunities for privacy and focused work.

The result balanced old and new, collaboration and concentration, and the character of a historic building with the culture of a creative company.

CARNEGIE MUSEUM OF ART EXHIBITIONS
NORTH OAKLAND | PITTSBURGH

mossArchitects worked with the Carnegie Museum of Art on two exhibitions. For one of those, Faked, Forgotten, Found, the architecture of the exhibition became part of how visitors understood the artwork.

The design centered on four paintings whose stories could not be understood from the front alone. Visitors also needed to see the backs of the canvases to understand the process of investigating and rediscovering original works that had been painted over.

Our solution was a simple cylindrical pavilion positioned within the gallery. Like the paintings themselves, it had a distinct front and back.

A small architectural intervention created a new way to look, move, and discover.

BURGATORY RESTAURANTS
GREATER PITTSBURGH

Working with the team behind Burgatory, mossArchitects developed a design approach that could establish a recognizable identity while adapting to very different locations throughout the Pittsburgh region.

A modern, straightforward material palette, strong entry elements, and recurring architectural features created continuity from one restaurant to the next without making every location identical.

Over five years, we designed nine Burgatory restaurants, exploring how architecture could support a growing local brand while allowing each location to respond to its own setting.

ARSENAL BANK BUILDING
LAWRENCEVILLE | PITTSBURGH

Built in 1883 and 1884, the Arsenal Bank Building was once a prominent part of the Butler Street business district. By the time our client purchased it, the building was vacant and in need of significant repair.

The renovation focused on bringing activity back to this neighborhood landmark while respecting its historic character. The brick facade was repaired, windows were replaced, and large operable storefronts reopened the ground floor to the street.

A new restaurant brought people back inside and activity back to the sidewalk, giving a long vacant building a new chapter in the life of the neighborhood.
